Lisbon has a strong commitment to sustainability. In 2016, it was the first European City to sign the New Covenant of Mayors for Climate Change and Energy, a European initiative whose objective is to engage and support cities and towns to commit to reaching the European Union climate mitigation and adaptation targets.

Due to its significant progress towards environmental sustainability in recent years, in 2020, Lisbon was distinguished with the European Green Capital Award. The European Commission’s award recognized the city’s efforts on smart urban development, green growth and eco-innovation, alternative mobility, sustainable land use, climate change adaptation and urban waste treatment. The Expert Panel that examined the award candidates highlighted Lisbon’s clear vision for sustainable urban mobility, which prioritizes cycling, public transport, and walking, as well as its focus on sustainable land use with an emphasis on establishing green infrastructure and connected networks of green space, to counteract the impacts of climate change.
