Central Lisbon University Hospital Center (CHULCentral) has 500 years of history caring for patients and training health professionals.
At the origin of the center are the Civil Hospitals of Lisbon, HCL, and, before that, in the 15th century, the Hospital of Todos-Os-Santos. It is from these early times that the current identifying symbol of the center, “Omnia Santorum”, comes from.

CHULCentral is made up of six hospitals: Hospital São José (H.S.J.), Hospital Santo António dos Capuchos (H.S.A.C.), Hospital Santa Marta (H.S.Marta), Hospital Dona Estefânia (H.D.E.), Hospital Curry Cabral (H.C.C.) and Alfredo da Costa Maternity Hospital (M.A.C.).

Among other relevant services for Lisbon and for the country, CHULC operates three Emergency Departments: for adults, at HSJ, pediatric, at HDE and obstetric, at MAC.

More than 8000 professionals work at CHULC, where history is connected to technology and innovation. In these hospitals you find the most experienced robotic surgery teams and the most important transplantation units in the country working inside historical buildings filled with beautiful tiles. Also, you find our ECMO rescue team, that transport critically ill patients from all the country in order to treat them with this life-saving therapy.

Innovating in care through history is what you will find here.

The Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Lisbon Francisco Gentil, E.P.E. (IPO Lisboa) is a National Health Service public hospital with almost a century of experience in the study and treatment of cancer. Named after its founder, the surgeon Francisco Gentil, the Portuguese Institute was created by government decree on December 29, 1923. Since the beginning, it was connected to the Faculty of Medicine in a pioneer organizational model that concentrated the main purposes of the institution – research, teaching and assisting cancer patients – which only 60 years later would be enshrined by the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
IPO Lisboa always advocated highly specialized and high quality assistance skills that have earned it the certification in the treatment of various types of cancer by the Ministry of Health and accreditation by the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI). IPO’s quality indicators match those of the World’s best reference centres.
With more than 2000 workers, IPO takes care of patients from three Health Regions in mainland - Lisbon and Tagus Valley, Alentejo and Algarve –, as well as the ones from the Autonomous Regions of Azores and Madeira. IPO also receives patients from Portuguese-speaking African countries.
Enjoying a great capital of social, medical and scientific prestige, it is an institution deeply cherished by patients and their families, who value the humanistic and patient-centred approach of providing health care.

In June 2022, SESARAM (Public Health Service of Madeira Islands) was awarded as an Honorary Member of the Order of Merit by the President of the Portuguese Republic.

Serving nearly 1 million people each year (inhabitants and tourists, considering the intense tourism flow of the islands), SESARAM is currently organized around 3 hospitals and 47 public healthcare facilities. At current date, SESARAM currently has more 6000 healthcare professionals, spread through the islands.

With a unique hospital information system, each person has a unique ID and only one electronic health record (EHR) in all public healthcare facilities, with all the medical records and structured social clinical data. This guarantees the complete data sharing among the different elements of patient assistance: Primary Care Units, Pre-hospital Emergency System, Hospitals and the Continuous Care Network.

Additionally, based in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, SESARAM works closely with the Madeira International Disaster Training Center (MIDTC), which through an experienced group of 36 instructors in Trauma and Disaster (most of them working at SESARAM), operates the Medical Response to Major Incidents (MRMI) course throughout the country, that is focused on the training and readiness of the professionals involved in accident or disaster response.
