Call for Abstracts now open for the 46th World Hospital Congress
20 February 2023
Abstract submissions are now being accepted for the 46th World Hospital Congress, which takes place from 25 to 27 October 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal.
The International Hospital Federation (IHF) organizes the World Hospital Congress to bring together hospital leaders and healthcare system executives to connect around global learning for local action. This annual congress is a forum to exchange best practices in leadership and management of healthcare delivery.
Abstracts for the scientific programme, presented under the theme ‘Tomorrow’s world’, can be submitted for any of the five thematic tracks before the deadline of 5 April 2023:
TRACK 1: Leaders successfully navigating the future.
TRACK 2: Wellbeing and the future for our professionals.
TRACK 3: Innovative approaches to providing healthcare.
TRACK 4: The ever-expanding digital landscape.
TRACK 5: Next-generation, climate-resilient, and sustainable healthcare.
Hospital and healthcare executives, managers, professionals, and providers, as well as government, academic and research institutions and NGOs are invited to submit their abstracts. The call for submissions includes projects and programmes that showcase innovations, models, and examples of leadership. Submitters can consult the abstract guidelines of the 46th World Hospital Congress for further details.
The 46th World Hospital Congress is organized by the IHF with a host country consortium composed of the Portuguese Association for Hospital Development (APDH), Portuguese Association of Hospital Managers (APAH), and Portuguese Association of Private Hospitals (APHP). The event is presented under the High Patronage of the President of the Portuguese Republic.
Ronald Lavater, CEO of the IHF, reflected on the impact of the collaborations that the congress fosters:
“The World Hospital Congress is the premier event in the International Hospital Federation’s calendar, and we are thrilled to be hosted by Lisbon in 2023.
Different delivery models are in place across the globe, but the issues faced by hospitals and their communities, workers, and patients are common challenges that benefit from common solutions. The COVID-19 pandemic was a reminder that health systems are reliant on strong networks where all actors can participate.
The three Portuguese institutions that have come together to host the World Hospital Congress are a great example of how public and private service providers can work together to lead the conversation about the future of healthcare delivery.”
The 46th World Hospital Congress takes place from 25 to 27 October 2023 at the Lisbon Congress Centre. Pre-congress activities, including workshops, governance meetings, and networking opportunities will be held on 23 and 24 October.
The host country consortium emphasized the imperative for healthcare executives to invest in knowledge exchange with worldwide peers to continually improve service provision and decision-making:
“We are convinced that the conclusions which will be reached in Lisbon will be a reference for new solutions in people's access to medical care and for the resilience and sustainability of health systems.
At a time when health is at the top of citizens' priorities – in Portugal and throughout the world – this debate will also contribute to strengthening the public discussion around such a relevant area of concern in our lives.”
Sustainability will be integral to the organization and delivery of the 46th World Hospital Congress. Reflected in TRACK 5 of the scientific content’s theme, the IHF established the Geneva Sustainability Centre in 2022 to support hospitals and healthcare executives leading the transformation to low carbon, resilient, and sustainable healthcare. The Geneva Sustainability Centre’s mission is also to embed good practice into all IHF activities, including the Congress.
