Speakers
Dr Manuel Pizarro
Portuguese Health Minister
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
Director-General, World Health Organization, Switzerland
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was elected WHO Director-General for a five-year term by WHO Member States at the Seventieth World Health Assembly in May 2017. In doing so, he was the first WHO Director-General elected from among multiple candidates by the World Health Assembly, and was the first person from the WHO African Region to head the world’s leading public health agency.
Born in the Eritrean city of Asmara, Dr Tedros graduated from the University of Asmara with a Bachelor of Biology, before earning a Master of Science (MSc) in Immunology of Infectious Diseases from the University of London, a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Community Health from the University of Nottingham and an Honorary Fellowship from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Following his studies, Dr Tedros returned to Ethiopia to support the delivery of health services, first working as a field-level malariologist, before heading a regional health service and later serving in Ethiopia’s federal government for over a decade as Minister of Health and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
As Minister of Health from 2005 to 2012, he led a comprehensive reform of the country’s health system, built on the foundation of universal health coverage and provision of services to all people, even in the most remote areas.
Under his leadership, Ethiopia expanded its health infrastructure, developed innovative health financing mechanisms, and expanded its health workforce. A major component of reforms he drove was the creation of a primary health care extension programme that deployed 40 000 female health workers throughout the country. A significant result was an approximate 60% reduction in child and maternal mortality compared to 2000 levels.
As Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2016, he elevated health as a political issue nationally, regionally and globally. In this role, he led efforts to negotiate the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, in which 193 countries committed to the financing necessary to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
Prior to his election as Director-General of WHO, Dr Tedros held many leadership positions in global health, including as Chair of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, Chair of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, and Co-chair of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Board.
After taking office as WHO Director-General on 1 July 2017, Dr Tedros initiated the most significant transformation in the Organization’s history, which has generated a wide range of achievements.

Auditorium III + IV
When
Wednesday 25 October
13:40 - 14:40
Location
Auditorium III + IV
Session Description
The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly transformed the use of telehealth globally, as healthcare providers came to rely on it to maintain continuity of care. In many places it has become a standard model of care, and in many parts of the world we have seen benefits in terms of reduced costs, improved access, better patient experience and reduced waiting times. But have these benefits been equitably distributed? Has telehealth contributed to reducing health inequities and improving access to healthcare for underserved populations? Does it have a role in protecting and supporting the workforce in underserved areas of the world through easing the burden on overstretched staff?
Through discussion by a panel of experts, this session will explore the contributions telehealth has made to improving health equity and access to healthcare for hard-to-reach communities. The panel will share the successes and challenges they have encountered, and the barriers that remain. They will also look at access to healthcare through a workforce lens and discuss how virtual care platforms can be used to support healthcare staff in underserved areas to reduce burnout, improve work-life balance and improve staff retention.

'Green UHC': Paving the way for sustainable healthcare in LMICs
Booking required
Room 5C
When
Thursday 26 October
07:30 - 08:50
Location
Room 5C
Session Description
Responding to the sustainability agenda is a long-term challenge for the healthcare sector globally, including in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This urges us to adopt a long-term vision and work towards the development of low carbon, resilient and health promoting/equitable health systems across all stages of their development. If this is not considered upfront, there is a high likelihood that countries could develop carbon and resource intensive approaches that will subsequently need to be decarbonized and adapted for climatic and other events.
Energy access is among the major challenges, especially in regions that will be substantially exposed to climate impacts while already facing energy poverty and growing energy needs for health services. Therefore, the discussion of this first ever ‘Green UHC’ breakfast would aim to highlight some initiatives and findings to 1) address the issue of energy access and management for healthcare providers and 2) how it could help achieve resilient & decarbonization agenda for the healthcare sector in LMICs.
This session is co-hosted by the IHF Geneva Sustainability Centre and the French Development Agency. It is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about this agenda and in providing their perspectives. The programme will ensure sufficient time for discussions and Q&A.
Registration: Please complete the form here for us to estimate the number of attendees for breakfast.

Session Description
Hospital leaders no longer fit into traditional models of management, their role is continuously evolving. The hybridization of leadership roles with clinicians taking on management positions and responsibilities beyond clinical care represents a challenge but also a strong opportunity for healthcare. However, clinicians must be supported to meet expectations on employee satisfaction, patient orientation, and other non-clinical deliverables of hospitals. To successfully achieve the goals and objectives of the organization, providing skills, knowledge, and empowering clinicians is necessary. From Saudi Arabia, Georgia, Brazil, and Germany, IHF members share their experiences on empowering the clinical voice in hospital leadership and the positive outcomes on patient safety and staff engagement.

From France, India, Spain and Rwanda, healthcare leaders take us through specific strategies to enhance the patient's experience. By using data, pathways, and shared decision models we can improve consistency in care, break down silos and place patients at the centre of all we do. Session Description
The Carbon Emissions Learning Lab (CELL) was launched by the IHF Geneva Sustainability Centre in June 2023. This is carried out by choosing a maximum of three initiatives (from a total of 32) each year, with further budget available for staff training and engagement.
This demo is an opportunity to test this learning experience, ask questions directly to the CELL developers, and explore how it may suit you and/or your audience in the future.
This session is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about the CELL, either as an individual user or as facilitator for a relevant group (e.g., continuous education; university course).

Hi, I am a 2nd year anesthetic resident from the Taipei Medical University Hospital (TMUH) in Taiwan. My training course includes all aspects in the anesthetic care including as general anesthesia and sedations for adult and pediatric patients. Healthcare including anesthesia pollutes the atmosphere, land, and waterways with detrimental health effects long has been released into the environment. I became concerned with the important issue of climate change and the impact of anesthesia has on our planet. As a department, we started a “sustainable anesthesia” project, which focused on measuring our carbon footprint (inhalational anesthetic agents), and formulate a departmental de-carbonization protocol, which provided practical strategies of sustainable anesthetic care. And it is with much pleasure that I was given the opportunity to shares our experience (and success) with you!
